To start off our week, we introduced a new voting system with the children to show how we will be making decisions as a class. Our first class vote was to decide on a proper name for our new pet fish. At lunch, we asked all of the children for suggestions, afterwards, we narrowed it down to four options. The final choices were; Chocolate, Cheese, Fishy, and Guinea Pig.
To make the options more concrete and visually understandable, we decided to write the name on each block and laid them side by side on the carpet. Each child was given their own block to represent their vote and placed it on the name of their choice. In between each turn, the children counted the blocks and we tracked the changes out loud.
Afterwards, we asked the children which name had the most blocks and the results were clear for the children to understand. “Fishy” had the most votes with a total of 3 votes, “Guinea pig” had 2 votes, and “Chocolate” and “Cheese” each had 1 vote. For the rest of the school year, we will be making classroom decisions using this hands-on block voting system.
Have a good Shabbos,
Morah Megan and Morah Shoshana

Love this concrete way of explaining the voting system!
