Right away, our Green Room friends showed interest in our costumes and what it means to be a community helper! Morah Deena noticed their interest, and printed out pictures of real people doing very important jobs. This led to incredible discussions about how police officers keep us safe, dentists take care of our teeth, plumbers fix our toilets, and so much more! These images and discussions have led our young friends’ expanding imagination during dramatic play. While wearing the doctor outfit, Mason asked Morah Courtney if she was sick, and if he could check her body. Morah Courtney agreed, and Mason checked her heart and exclaimed: “You’re all better!” While dressed as the police officer, Morgan told everyone that he was going to check the room to make sure it’s safe. He did a lap around and came back to report “Everything’s good!” Do you have an important job that you want to tell our friends about?
The wonder of an avocado pit…
Morah Deena’s snack turned into an exciting learning opportunity. After the pit was removed from the avocado, each friend got to hold it and make a statement or ask a question about it. “Why does it have a hole at the top?” asked Ava. We love seeing how everyday things can turn into exciting learning exploration.
We met Shelly, the tortoise!
Our Blue Room friends have a real live tortoise that they let us come and visit. Before we touched her shell, we made predictions about what we thought it would feel like. Gavi predicted it would be soft, but when he felt that it wasn’t he said “Oh, it’s hard!” Sarah was amazed by the texture of the shell, stating that it was bumpy when she had predicted that it would be smooth.
Amazing Story from the Green Room!
On our way down to our new play area, Alice was very nervous about walking down the stumps. Morah Courtney and I are working very hard on encouraging our friends to be independent, so we try not to “help” when we are confident in their capabilities and they are not in danger. After a minute or so, unprompted, Sarah got up from the sandbox to help Alice. Sarah stretched out her hand, and told Alice “You can do it. I know you can. Take another step. Don’t worry, I’m here.” Then Mason and Morgan got up to join Sarah and encourage Alice. Together, they all worked to get Alice safely down the steps!
